Today in the Apiary...

...
...I marveled at how many bees there were (and how much I love my gloves)...

...scolded myself for letting the syrup run out of the top feeder...

...reluctantly treated another hive for mites....

...checked to see that my new local queen was released and happy...

...and she was...

...and wondered how in the world this particular hive continues to build wax in the wrong place.

Overall, a good day.

  1. Gosh you do a good bee photo. I get excited every time you post. Imma need to get me some of those frame-holding tongs - they make things look easy.

    Re the "wax in the wrong place", from here (and to my very amateur eye) it looks like the cells are quite a bit bigger than the cells built on the foundation, which might mean that the hive has decided it needs to raise some drones (who don't fit in the smaller cells). If you leave their architecture in place, I'd be interested to read what they end up doing with it.

  2. Hey! Yes, it seems like when they "misbehave" and build comb in places they shouldn't, it tends to be drone cell sized. My need for order and keeping things tidy leads me to remove these architectural experiments. They were starting to fill this one with nectar.

  3. Oh nice shot of the Queen! Disregard my last comment, I see you use mite strips. Have you heard of any other ways to treat mites? That's an interesting photo of the Queen cell. Do you split your hives when you see Queen cells? Or do you add another box to prevent swarming?
