It's spring in Oregon!

Lots of emerging bees and lots of mites can only mean one thing - spring is here!  This was after a formic acid treatment.  It's pretty cool to see where the brood cluster is concentrated - all without opening the hive.

  1. How did you use formic acid without opening the hive? In the uk we spray it on the bees directly

  2. I meant to say that I can inspect how many mites have dropped and where the bees are emerging by looking at a mite board, which does not require the hive to be opened. I definitely did have to open the hive to place the formic acid. Here we use two strips of very concentrated gel that we lay crosswise on the frames between the brood boxes. Very potent stuff, but it works!
